Gothic Tropic, the conceptually loaded “chaos pop” project of singer-songwriter and guitarist Cecilia Della Peruti, returns today with with the new single “OnlyFans,” the first from a new EP, “Tang Brain,” arriving in July.

Taking shape during the pandemic, the genre-fluid EP is a collage — or perhaps, barrage — of ideas that melds Peruti’s singular technical prowess with biting commentary on topics such as patriarchy, gender/sexual dynamics, mental health and weed. It features contributions from pop singer Allie X, producer-drummer Robert DeLong and Toro Y Moi collaborator Brijean.

Peruti has long juggled her solo project with her work as an in-demand player, having performed with Beck, Charli XCX and Allie X, among others. The follow-up to Gothic Tropic’s 2017 full-length “Fast or Feast” and the 2019 single “Drunk on a Rhythm,” the five-song “Tang Brain,” she says, was made in “a euphoric state of artistic freedom following a slew of slapstick failures administered by a fascist music industry. This EP asserts that genre is dead.”

“OnlyFans” deals with Gothic Tropic’s “real-life ascension to OnlyFans,” the subscriber-based content-sharing platform popular in (but not limited to) the porn world. Other topics on the table in the barely-2-minute blast, which features DeLong’s drumming: “Frustrations surrounding the toxic paradigm of the music industry. Mental health (‘Psilocybin/Lexipro’). Mocking pandering talent (‘every cuck ends up flaccid’). Resentful of poverty. Virality culture,” she says.

The EP will be out July 9 via Dome of Doom.
