After a 3 1/2-year absence that included a parting of the ways with Columbia Records, a pandemic and, ostensibly, wishing upon a star, L.A. quartet Lo Moon is back, cinematic as ever.

The band — Matt Lowell, Crisanta Baker, Sam Stewart and Sterling Laws — today released “Dream Never Dies,” their first new music since their self-titled debut album came out in early 2018. Like their debut, the tune evokes the atmospheric anthems of 1990s Britpop (they are unabashedly warm to Coldplay). Its release follows a period during which the quartet exercised their muscle memory by treating fans to covers of songs by artists as diverse as (onetime tourmates) Air and Black Sabbath (not to mention Prefab Sprout and Adrienne Lenker).

“As I get older, I’ve become more and more nostalgic about my youth,” Lowell says of the song. “I had way less anxiety, I didn’t fear losing the people closest to me, or have to face the bigger questions of life. Hope and optimism were just a little bit easier back then. I work hard not to let the complexities of life suck the hope out of me. This song, if nothing else, is a reminder to try my best and not let that happen.”

Michael Hili (The Killers, Lemon Twigs, John Carroll Kirby) directed the video.
