In November, L.A. quartet Lo Moon broke a three-year silence by issuing the single “Dream Never Dies,” a song that embodied the widescreen vision they exhibited on their 2018 debut album, which was anchored by their 2016 single “Loveless.” It was comfort food for dreamers.

They take a more experimental tack on “Raincoats,” the single that introduces Lo Moon’s sophomore album, “A Modern Life,” out Feb. 25. It opens with two-plus minutes of hallucinatory roaming before frontman Matt Lowell rights himself for a couple beckoning verses. Less than a minute later, cacophony reigns.

The new album was produced by the band — Lowell, Crisanta Baker, Sam Stewart and Sterling Laws — along with Yves Rothman (Yves Tumor, Miya Folick) and Chris Walla, who produced their debut.

“It’s about survival,” Lowell says of the album’s raison d’être. “Navigating through all that’s thrown at us. Maintaining who we are and where we want to be. Music itself has been so powerful for us in our own survival, it can change everything in an instant. As a band, we’ve got a lot of reverence for it and strive for it. We don’t take it for granted.”
