The trauma of the COVID-19 lockdown — solitary confinement that often felt like a festering wound — is given voice on “Night Walker,” the smoldering new single from L.A. quartet FEELS. No, it’s not a pleasant memory, but if you’re making up for lost time this summer, it’s a reminder to appreciate every moment.

The single comes with a powerful video directed by Jeff Fribourg and starring dancer Gregory Barnett. It “paints a picture of quarantine: bouncing off the walls of our minds, facing who we really are in the absence of each other, but also a deeper longing to reunite with nature and our true humanity which was felt even before the pandemic,” says Laena M.I. (Myers-Ionita, as she has reverted to her birth name after going by Laena Geronimo dating back to her days fronting the pre-FEELS band Raw Geronimo).

“Night Walker,” the lead track on FEELS’ new EP, “Subversive Reaction,” out July 22 via Deemed Printable, an L.A.-based art publication. The special pressing will be limited to 250 silk-screened 12-inch vinyl copies, hand-packaged and printed using a risograph printer. The three-song release is the quartet’s first new music since their acclaimed 2019 album, “Post Earth.” The new release welcomes to the band guitarist-vocalist Cole Berliner (Kamikaze Palm Tree), who takes over for Shannon Lay. The foursome is at work on a new album as well.

“We were all in the studio mixing ‘Subversive Reaction’ when the lockdowns began,” Laena M.I. says. “We gave ‘Night Walker’ a moody vibe that sounded to us like walking down big-city alleyways alone at night, questioning the true meaning of ‘connection’… and then as the world was forced into isolation and the months dragged on, the lyrics hit in a much more literal sense than we ever could have imagined.”
