French-born songwriter-producer Amélie Rousseaux, who makes music under the name Sofia Bolt, first collaborated with Van Dyke Parks on the title track to her 2019 album, “Waves.”
Parks, the 79-year-old songwriter-producer-arranger-svengali, returns to apply his magic touch to the chamber-pop gem “All She Wants,” part of a two-song release, “City of You,” released this month. (Part 2 is a gossamer cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Perfect Day.”) It’s the first music from Bolt since she released the “Soft Like a Peach” EP in February and arrives with the footnote that a new album will arrive in 2023.
The Parks edit revisits a song that Bolt originally released in the spring of 2020, just as the COVID-19 lockdown gripped the world.
“Arranging for Amélie — what a joy — just a case of duplicating her inventive lines,” Parks says. “Reactive rather than creative, I put my focus on the intro, with her jazz infusions — now with five saxes, in flight formation — to land with Amélie, in a city of light.”
